I will be the first to admit that I stole this idea from a customer who runs a detective agency, thanks mate!

Here are some things to consider when choosing the right website design company.

1) Can you SEE them?

This may sound strange, but there are no end of companies out there that would rather work 100% over the phone, and 100% over email with no face to face contact at all. Now we like to liaise with people over email once we have made initial contact, but that’s just because everything is then written down, and not committed to memory.

However, if a client wants to come and see us – they can! Our door is always open and the kettle has usually just boiled.

2) Happy Customers?

The company you are talking to may talk-the-talk, but have they any proof to back themselves up?

They could have a testimonials bit on their site, and sure you could believe all the thins you read on there, but if you are able to see reviews on a third party site like FreeIndex then you can be pretty sure the reviews are real and not made up to make the company sound the bee’s knees!

3) Do they know their stuff?

Its very easy for anyone with a copy of Microsoft word and a laptop to claim to be a web developer, but the websites they produce simply may not work! I don’t mean you cant browse them, i mean they don’t add value, they don’t bring in business for that particular company.

A website should be an investment, it should be a members of the sales team – and the beauty of this particular member of staff is that they only need paying once and don’t require any holidays or in fact any time off at all.

4) Are they actually doing the work?

As we’ve been web nerds for many, many years – some of our emails accounts have been whored about a bit and we get at least one SEO/Design company EVERY DAY sending us an email saying how they can provide web design services for cheap as chips prices – the only catch is that your developer will actually be in India.

Now I’m not knocking Indian web designers – in fact one of the best coders/designers i know is Indian, but the fact they are in a totally different part of the world means communication can be a nightmare, and sometimes as English isn’t the designers first language, portraying what you want to them over email or phone can sometimes be impossible.

We have a client recently who visited the office once a week to input into his site, needless to say he’s happier than a pig in.. well you get the picture.

And beware of some of the HUGE web design companies, one of them in particular, only use Indian developers, yet from the look of their site and how the sell themselves you’d think they had a big office in London somewhere.
